News 30 December 2007 Another successful year comes to an end The last quarter of the season included the remembrance service at Lockerley, a number of Christmas/Carolling engagements and preparations for our concert in Lyndhurst in March 2008. Amongst our Christmas engagements we played at Lyndhurst Fun Day, Greenview and Nether Wallop Village Green. Our last engagement at Nether Wallop was our final performance of the year and it was made all the more special by the fine supper provided by the Village Green Committee at the Five Bells Pub. If you are ever near Nether Wallop, we can highly recommend the Five Bells for fine food, beer and wines. The supper at the Five Bells enabled the whole band to enjoy a great social evening before breaking up for the festive season and should put us all in fine form for to tackle heavy 2007 engagement list. May we wish you all
a Happy New Year. 16 October 2007 A busy summer season comes to an end The band have enjoyed a busy and successful summer season of engagements with no washouts or cancellations due to poor weather. Although a couple of events did come close to an early finish due to threatening skies. The final event of the summer season at Romsey Memorial park was well attended with an estimated audience of over 100 people enjoying the glorious sun and fine music. As well as preparing for the Christmas season of engagements, we are in the process of selecting a program for the concert at Lyndhurst in March next year. We have more or less decided on a theme and are now trying out various selections of music to see if it fits in and the band enjoy playing it. This last point is very important to us, since we believe there is no point in playing music just because it's popular, the band must also enjoy playing it. Although we do now have a good compliment of players, we would love to welcome some new members. So if you play a brass instrument, or would like to learn to play one, please do get in touch with us via our contact us page. 3 April 2007 Engagement List starts to get busy This year the Band kicked off its engagements with a concert at Copythorne. This was a very well attended event and the varied program was much enjoyed by all. The audience were treated to a fine spectacle when Richard Taylor, Tim Maclachlan and Bill Baillie appeared on stage dressed up in ladies clothes, complete with make up to play their rendition of Three Little Maids (not a pretty sight). This years engagement list has now been published and can be viewed here. Only confirmed events are shown here with others still be added when dates/times are known. 5 January 2007 Strengthened Band looks forward to a New Year The band are delighted to welcome 3 more players to its ranks in the form of Dave on Bb Bass, Luke on Eb Bass and Hannah on Eb Horn. 2006 has certainly been a great year for recruitment and we hope this continues in 2007. The much strengthened band allows us to perform a wider range of music and should give us much more flexibility in our 2007 program selections. We start this year with a concert at Copythorne Parish Hall on the 19 January and initial ticket sales are proving to be very good, so please contact us now if you would like to order tickets. Other engagements for the year will be posted on the site as they are confirmed. Don't forget the AGM; this will be held in the bandroom on 23 February 2007 and all persons interested in the future and development of the band are welcome to attend. 30 September 2006 Fitting Finale to Summer Season A busy and very successful summer season was rounded off by a fine performance at the Romsey Bandstand on the 3 September. Despite a rather dodgy forecast, the weather held out and provided us and the scores of people in the park with glorious sunshine. The program for the day was warmly appreciated by the audience, many of whom chatted with members of the band during the interval and at the end of the performance. The photo on the home page was taken by an audience member for publicity purposes and we are pleased to show this on our site. 25 August 2006 New Players Welcomed to Lockerley Band The bands numbers
have been boosted in recent weeks with 3 new players; The band will end their summer season with a performance at the Romsey Bandstand and are looking forward to their Autumn season starting with a Concert at Copythorne. Please see our Engagements page for more details.
10 July 2006 Summer Season engagements get off to a fine start The bands summer engagement season got off to a fine start with a an excellent afternoon spent at Greenview Rest Home in Lockerley. The large crowd enjoyed the performance of the band in the surroundings of the fine gardens while enjoying tea and cakes. This was followed by an afternoon performance at Sherfield English Strawberry Fair at Sherfield House. Again a large crowd enjoyed the performance whilst savouring their Cream Teas and Strawberries. The band are now looking forward to Friday (14 July) where they will be playing at Copythorne for the RBL summer event. Despite the band struggling to attract new members to fill its ranks, it still manages to deliver a well balanced and musical sound which is well received by the audience.
9 May 2006 Downton Band add the The Star (Lockerley Bands own Signature Tune) to their repertoire Having acquired a set of Richard Taylor's march 'The Star', Downton Bands MD (Roland Wright) was so impressed with the quality of the piece that he immediately added it to the Bands repertoire. The first public performance of this piece by Downton was at the recent Cuckoo Fair Concert in Downton. It was received with rapturous applause and will be performed many times this season by the Downton players at the many engagements they already have in their diary. Please contact us if you would like further details about this fantastic piece of music, or visit the web site of Sounds Right Music Publications directly to order the music.
21 February 2006 Richard Taylor wows audience and judges at B&R Composition Final. Lockerley Band's solo trombone layer and Assistant Conductor made it to the final of the Brighouse and Rastrick Composition Title at the Brighouse Central Methodist Church on Thursday 18 February with his composition 'Fanfare for Gallantry'. Although the title was won by Paul Lovatt-Cooper, the audience's favourite piece was Richard's 'Fanfare for Gallantry' which was inspired by John Williams. His piece was also given a special mention by the judges. Please click here to read more details on the event and comments from the judges on the 4barsrest.com website.
27 December 2005 As the Year Ends As we come to the end of the Band's 125th year we can look back with some pride on its achievements. Although the Band has struggled with a shortage of players all year, we have managed to successfully complete all of our engagements with the highlight being the 125th Anniversary Concert on the 21st October. With the help of a few guest players the band performed better than it has done for some time. The programme was full and varied and included the 1st official public performance of its new signature tune THE STAR, written especially for the Band by Richard Taylor (1st Trombone and Assistant Conductor). The performance was also recorded by Solo Cornet Player, Jonathon "Barry" Bowden who then produced a CD and DVD of the performance. If you are interested in purchasing a Band set of the fantastic march, The Star or the CD or DVD of the concert, please contact Sounds Right Music via their website: http://www.soundsrightmusic.co.uk/ . The Band also successfully fulfilled its other remaining engagement including the Remembrance Parade and Service and its caroling engagements. On the 11th December the Band enjoyed a Social Afternoon with all players and their spouses with a Christmas Dinner at the Star Public House (the pub which proved to be the inspiration for the Bands new signature tune, The Star). However, we were not allowed to enjoy our lunch until the band had given a full performance of Christmas Carols and Popular Christmas Songs to all the other customers in the pub. We look forward to a new year's engagements and pray that we can attract some new players to take some of the strain off the existing very hard worked team. We would like to wish all our friends and supporters a Happy and Healthy New Year.
10 August 2005 125th Anniversary Concert The Band will holding a 125th Anniversary Concert at Lockerley Church on the 21st October. We would be very grateful for any assistance by visiting and guest players on this very important evening for the Band. Please contact us if you think you can help us out at this event.
8 August 2005 Summer Engagements The Band's calendar of summer engagements is all but over now with one event to go, The Bandstand at the Memorial Park in Romsey. Having had a successful round of engagements at Copythorne RBL event, Greenview Rest Home (Lockerley), Kings Somborne and Carters Clay the players can now have a small rest from public events until the 11th September when we appear at the Bandstand, Romsey. The annual Garden Party at Greenview also raised £1,015 towards the owner's (Ian Bradford) charity walk along the Great Wall of China to help raise funds for the Alzheimer's Society. The Band wish Ian well on his forthcoming charity walk.
10 June 2005 The Star - The Bands own Signature Tune: Richard Taylor, Solo Trombone and Assistant Conductor, has composed a march tune specifically for the band entitled The Star. This is a particularly stirring composition with great movement and musicality in all passages. It is planned to play this wonderful piece at the beginning or end of all future engagements of the band and is an absolute pleasure to both play and listen to. The inspiration came from a very old photograph of the band, believed to be taken in the year of its foundation (1880), outside the Star Public House in Tytherley the village next to Lockerley. A copy of this picture can be seen in the Galley page of this website. Please contact us if you would like further details about this fantastic piece of music, or visit the web site of Sounds Right Music Publications directly to order the music.
20 May 2005 Music Storage: New storage cupboards for our vast library of music have just been installed and organised by George and Joan. Many thanks from all of us for your great efforts here. Players Wanted: We
urgently require more players in most areas of the band, so if you are
